Tool 23 — Culture & Etiquette
Tell me the bath and the city — what to expect, what to bring.
A Turkish hamam is a real cultural experience, not just a shower. But etiquette, cost, and what to bring vary hugely: a Kılıç Ali Paşa in Istanbul is a 16th-century monument at €60+; a neighbourhood hamam in Şirince is €10 with the same ritual. Most travellers overpay or pick the wrong kind. This tool selects the right one.

Yes — it's expected. ₺200–400 per service, more if exceptional. The tellak (masseur) earns most of their income this way.
No — never. Historic hamam run gender-segregated hours (women afternoon, men evening, sometimes reversed). Tourist hamam often have separate wings.
A coarse exfoliating mitt — the tellak scrubs you down with it. Removes dead skin aggressively. Genuinely remarkable the first time.
