What this solves

The Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles programme is genuinely one of the more generous Star Alliance schemes, but it has a dirty secret: many "award" redemptions are not bookable at the published rate. The discounted promo awards (sub-10k miles for short-haul Europe) are real and amazing. The standard ones are usually a bad deal compared to a €99 cash ticket. This calculator checks both.

How to read the result

¢/mile = cents of ticket value you get per mile (e.g. 1.2€¢/mile).
Effective value = the cash ticket price minus what you'd get by selling the miles.
If effective value is close to zero, miles are basically as good as cash for this redemption.

Limitations

Miles & Smiles partner redemptions (United, ANA, Lufthansa) have different zone charts — this calculator assumes Turkish Airlines metal or Star Alliance partner at the Turkish chart rate.
The "miles buy-back" rate is hard to verify; most banks won't buy them but private brokers do. Use ~€150 per 10k as a real-world floor.
This calculator can't tell you if a specific date has award space. You still need to check the booking flow.

FAQ

Are Miles & Smiles miles easy to earn?

Through flying yes, but not much through credit cards unless you're a Turkish resident. The most common route for non-residents is the Miles & Smiles credit card in Türkiye or transferring from Hilton Honors.

What's the best use of Miles?

Domestic business class on the rare long-haul domestic flight (Istanbul-Trabzon business for ~12k miles), or short-haul Star Alliance within Europe when a cash ticket is over €300. Anything cheaper is usually a poor use.
